3 Days Explore Nyungwe Chimps

Situated in the Southern Province of Rwanda, Nyungwe National Park is rich and Biodiverse Park is one of Africa’s best spots to find wild chimpanzees. The 3 Day Nyungwe chimpanzees tour includes chimpanzee trekking with an experienced guide, a canopy walk and more. Chimpanzees are the closest relatives to humans sharing over 98% of their DNA with us and in Nyungwe, there are 500 individuals living in the same habitat with the rest of the primates and birds.

Besides the 13 primate species, the 970sq.km Nyungwe Forest National Park is a habitat to 310 species of birds, 200 tree species, colourful butterflies, etc. The bird list of Nyungwe Forest includes among others the Kivu ground thrush, red-throated alethe, Shelley’s crimson wing, Chapin’s flycatchers, Blue turacos, long-crested eagle, Rwenzori nightjars, Congo-bay owlet, and red-faced woodland warblers.

The Detailed Itinerary - 3 Days

A delicious cup of Rwandan tea/coffee to be served at your respective hotels in Kigali and after, meet your driver guide for briefing. From the hotel, start your city tour with your luggage all packed in the vehicle. You will have about 2 hours and this includes visiting the former presidential palace museum, Kigali Memorial Ground and other artisan centres. 

Continue on a scenic drive, and enjoy the view of the beautiful landscape in the countryside at Huye, you will be visiting the ethnographic museum, the King’s palace and the Murambi memorial. The final stop will be at Nyungwe where you will be checking in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Have breakfast and you will be expected at the briefing centre early enough departing from your lodge by 4-5 am. Get to understand chimpanzee trekking rules and you will embark on an actual search for the chimpanzee community along Cyamudongo or Uwinka with the lead of an experienced park guide.

Expect to take 2-4 hours exploring Nyungwe, chimpanzees and other primates. Upon finding a chimp community, you will have one hour for a close encounter and taking pictures. Other primates to expect to see include olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, Dent’s Mona monkeys, Hamlyn’s monkeys, Angola colobus monkeys, Owl-faced monkeys and others.

Have a leisurely lunch, and your afternoon comes with a fun-filling canopy walking experience. Explore Nyungwe Forest on the 2-hour canopy walk and expect to see primates, and birds and enjoy the view of the park’s forest canopy cover.

Meet with a local guide after breakfast and you will be exploring the Gisakura tea farm in the nearby Nyungwe Forest National Park. The tea farm excursion brings you an incredible experience of how tea is grown, processed and packed in the factory. Afterwards, you will be exiting the Southern Province for Kigali; about 6 hour’s drive via Butare and today marks the end of the 3-day tour.
